‘In the Garden’ Topic

Week Beginning 18th May

This week we are going to look at the life cycle of a butterfly.

A butterfly goes through 4 amazing stages in its life.

1. It starts  as a very small egg.  The coolest thing about butterfly eggs is that if you look closely enough, you can see the tiny caterpillar growing inside it.

2.  When the egg hatches, the butterfly is in its second stage of its life cycle.  It is now a caterpillar and eats and eats at this stage. The caterpillar grows really quickly and it sheds its skin lots of times as it is growing.

3.  The next stage is the pupa (or chrysalis) stage.  As soon as the caterpillar has finished growing, it forms into a pupa.  From the outside it looks as if the caterpillar may just be resting, but inside there is lots of action.  The caterpillar is changing very quickly.

4.  Now for the last stage!  The butterfly is ready to come out.  It has a rest when it first comes out and soon it is ready to fly.

  • Look at the Power Point below to find out about the lifecycle of a butterfly.
  • Watch the video clip about butterflies
  • Try the activity sheet.
  • Learn how to make a butterfly feeder.

Week Beginning 11th May

For the next two weeks we will be learning all about minibeasts.

Minibeasts are little, tiny creatures. Some have wings like flies and bees. Some have no legs like snails and slugs. Minibeasts with 6 legs are called insects. Spiders have 8 legs.  Millipedes and centipedes have gots lots of legs!

  1. Have a look at the minibeasts that Mrs. Hutchison and Mrs. Hannam have spotted in their gardens.
  2. Watch the video clips of minibeasts.
  3. Have a go at finding your own minibeasts.
  4. Record what you find using one of the tick sheets below.
