Burning Candle Science Investigation

We have been learning about Ancient Egypt. We know that Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. But why did he light a candle and hold it through a little hole in the door of the tomb?? We planned and carried out an investigation to see the effect a lack of oxygen supply would have on a burning candle!
